It is with great regret that I announce that the next issue of Velvet, Issue 22, Autumn 2009, out at the end of November, will be the last paper version of the magazine. Unfortunately, the recession has finally hit and after at least a year of struggling to keep going, it is time to admit that we have not had enough renewals, new subscriptions or advertising to keep going. Our limited income no longer covers the costs of printing.

More information will be available here on the website in due course, but in the meantime, if you were planning to subscribe to Velvet, please hold off doing so and DO NOT send any payments for subscriptions. If you wish to receive any back issues, then please continue to order those using Paypal.

Thank you for your support.

Naomi Young, Editor

Hello, and welcome to the website of Velvet Magazine - Britain's only independent lesbian magazine.

STOP PRESS: Important information about the Velvet Flash Fiction Competition - please click here; and many of our back issues are now available to buy in electronic PDF format! Click here for more information.

Velvet Magazine is the arts and literature magazine for lesbian women. Started in August 2004 to fill the gap for more mature, non-scene lesbians, it aims to be more ‘intellectual’ and issue-based than other lesbian magazines on the market. However, we don't take ourselves too seriously!

Humour, particularly from regular columnist V G Lee is always included, as are articles dealing with lesbian specific issues, book and film reviews, health issues, poetry and short fiction.

We’re not exclusive – we have straight female readers, gay male readers, bisexuals, transsexuals… There’s something for everyone who likes a good read and isn’t narrow minded.

Short and Girlie Productions have some new events happening in November! For more information, click here.

Well known lesbian writers previously interviewed in Velvet include: Sarah Waters, Sandi Toksvig, Louise Welsh, Val McDermid and Stella Duffy.

Currently quarterly, the A4-sized, full colour issues of Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter come out on the last Friday of February, May, August, and November. You can buy a single issue for just £3.20 or subscribe for a year (4 issues) for only £13.50 (postage and packing included in all prices). The magazine can be bought online or by post. To find out how, click on "Get Velvet" above.

Once you've had a look, why not spend some time browsing the website? There's lots to see and do! Tell us what you think on our messageboard, take a look at some videos, or read our editor's blog.

If you like what you see here, then please consider taking out a subscription. Velvet is entirely staffed by volunteers and runs on a very small budget. Our subscribers are our lifeblood, and without them there's a chance that Britain's only independently run lesbian magazine (we are not linked to any organisation) could be forced to stop printing in the near future.

So please show your support by taking out a subscription today. Simply click on "Get Velvet" above to start the process.

Members of the Velvet team at YLAF We hope you enjoy Velvet, and look forward to adding you to our growing community of readers.
